Agartala Bus Station
Agartala Bus Station

Tripura tourism isn’t one of the mainstream in India. Even when people travel to North-East India, Tripura remains the least explored. That’s because of its isolated geographic location, lack of appealing coastal regions, and high mountains.

So, why would you someone travel to Tripura?

Honestly, Tripura is for someone interested in the region’s history and architecture. There are specific leisure destinations in Tripura as well, which I will let you know about in this article.

How to Reach Tripura?

Tripura is the 3rd smallest state in India after Goa and Sikkim, having Agartala as its capital. Reaching here from Major cities takes some time due to its location. Usually, there is connectivity to Agartala and from there, you can choose another public transport.

As Tripura doesn’t have mountainous terrain, it has great railway connectivity. Here is the list of trains from major cities in India.

Train Name Train Number Boarding Station and Time Time to Reach Agartala Operates on

There is limited bus service from Guwahati, Silchar, Shillong, and other neighboring cities. However, the train is a far better option as it is more comfortable and frequent.

Best Time to Travel Tripura

Tripura’s hot and humid climate during summer is not favorable. Therefore, if you are planning to visit it, the best time is winter from November to February.

During this time, the temperature is relatively low. Even most of the cultural festivals are celebrated during this time. Therefore, you’ll be able to make the most out of your trip.

How Much Will It Cost to Travel Tripura?

The cost of traveling to Tripura depends on whether you choose to take a flight or train. Usually, the flight from Delhi to Tripura will cost you around Rs 11,000 ($150) and it is relatively cheaper from Kolkata and Guwahati. The train costs around Rs 3000/per person for (2nd AC).

Traveling within Tripura isn’t expensive. If you want to rent a two-wheeler, it will cost you a minimum of Rs 500 ($5) per day and goes up to Rs 1,500 ($20) depending upon the vehicle you select.

When you rent a car, it will obviously cost you more, but it’s still affordable. If you do the entire trip by renting a car and driver, it will cost around 2500 per day, but it depends on the route as well. For Unakoti and Jampui Hills, rate can be a bit higher as the terrain is hilly.

You can get good stays for Rs 2500/day. So, if you stay here for 7 days, the stay will cost 17500 ($230) for two people.

The food and restaurants are not much expensive. You can have Rs 250 ($3) per meal per person.

Speaking of entrance fees and activities, everything sums up to Rs 1,000 ($12) per person.

Overall, a 7-day trip to Tripura will cost you 21,000 ($250) per person. You can choose to stay at cheaper lodges and rent two-wheeler to decrease the cost.

This is one of my favorite destinations in Tripura, where you get to explore ancient carvings, do caving, and go for the boat ride—all in one place.

Chabimura is 85 km away from Agartala and 30 km away from Udaipur. The road from Udaipur to Chabimura is exceptionally beautiful.

You have to reach here and get a boat ticket. Then, the boat goes through the Gomti River and takes you to the ancient carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses. The boat halts while coming back and you can trek the sacred cave of Chabimura.

If you are going to Chabimura, Dumboor Lake isn’t that far. It is Tripura’s largest freshwater lake, 150 km from Agartala and 95 km from Udaipur.

If you love bird watching, boating, and camping, Dumboor Lake is the perfect destination. You can also find stays around the lake, making it perfect for a one-day trip.

Many Hindu and Buddhist images, structures, antiques, and idols are discovered here, signifying the peaceful coexistence of both religions.

The site is speared in an area of 10 km/sq and is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. It is often considered a pilgrimage for many Southeast Asian Buddhists.

Total visit duration Three to four hours
Entry Fees No entry fees
Opening Hours 09:00 am to 05:00 pm everyday

Maha Muni Buddhist Pagoda

If you have traveled to Pilak, Maha Muni Buddhist Pagoda won’t be too far.  It is just 24 km south of Pilak and will probably take around 45 minutes. There’s also a direct train to Sabloom from where you can book a taxi to visit the place. However, that’d be expensive and time-consuming than hiring a two-wheeler.

Maha Muni Pagoda attracts a lot of Buddhist tourists for the reason similar to Pilak.

If you don’t have much time, you can skip Pilak and Maha Muni Buddhist Pagoda, but if you are planning to visit any of the two, I’d suggest going for both. If you plan for a night stay, go to Sabloom market for shopping in the evening. Besides that, you can visit Kalapania Nature Park.

Total visit duration: 30 minutes.

Sepaijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Though there’s no entry point for the Sepaijala Wildlife Sanctuary as such, you can visit the zoo and artificial lake. I won’t rate it the best one but it is good enough to make it part of a trip, especially if you are traveling with the children.

If you want to go on a safari, you’ll have to contact a guide there but is not officially conducted by the Tripura tourist department.

Total visit duration Two to three hours

Khumulwng Eco Park is located 18 km away from Tripura on a completely different route. So, if you are traveling to Khumulwng, you have to travel back to Agartala to visit any other destination.

Keeping that into consideration, this is one of the best places to learn about Tripura’s tribal community. The park houses models of Tripura’s all-ethnic communities and showcases tribal life and its development.

According to Hindu mythology, it is said that there are 10 million such carvings in Unakoti. It is surrounded by lush green forest and has a beautiful setting. Not only several tourists but also devotees come here due to its religious importance.

Unakoti is located in the Northern Part of Tripura. All the other tourist spots that I mentioned until now are in Agartala or South of Agartala. Therefore, if you want to go to Unakoti, you’ll have to take a completely different route. If you are coming from the Assam side, there’s a road that goes to Unakoti from Silchar, but the road condition is not good. That’s why, I’d suggest you first travel to Agartala, and then, go to Unakoti from there.

Your destination is Vanghmun village, which is one of the most serene places in North-East India. The destination has amazing views and the lush green forest is named the cleanest village in Tripura.

You can book a homestay in Vanghmun and visit Betlingchhip the next day. You have to drive from Vanghmun to Phuldungsei, which is the starting point of the trek. You can find accommodation here as well.
